Vanessa Tierney joined BAMSI as Program Manager in 1981 and has been one of its strongest advocates and leaders since that time. In 1984, Ms. Tierney was appointed Director of Residential Services and successfully built the foundation for what has become the organization’s largest and most rapidly growing service area. As Director of Quality Management, Ms. Tierney went on to design BAMSI’s first comprehensive program evaluation system, which has become a highly regarded and lasting framework for quality enhancement and evidence-based practice. In 1998, Ms. Tierney was appointed Chief Operations Officer. She has overseen and guided all of BAMSI’s strategic development since that time, expanding services across the Commonwealth while assuring quality, integrity, and best clinical practice.

Ms. Tierney came to BAMSI with over 10 years experience in non-profit management with expertise in developmental disabilities, family systems, and crisis response. Ms. Tierney worked as Research Assistant and Program Coordinator at the University of Minnesota, Center for Social Research where she directed projects funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. She has also consulted to the Hennepin County Department of Juvenile Corrections in Minneapolis.

As a certified yoga teacher, Ms. Tierney brings a holistic and health-focused awareness to her work. She has presented at numerous conferences and often conducts workshops on topics related to personal growth and development as well as management and leadership. Ms. Tierney serves as Treasurer on the St. Joseph’s Manor Board of Directors, a program of Covenant Health Systems. In 2008, she received the Metro South Chamber of Commerce Athena Award for outstanding leadership.

Ms. Tierney earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and Master of Science degree from Lesley College, Graduate School of Management, which also honored her with the Award for Excellence and Achievement in Research and Thesis.
