11th Annual Senior reception

More than 500 seniors from Brockton and surrounding communities attended the 11th Annual Senior Reception on June 18th. The Senior Reception is hosted each year by the Dorn-Davies Senior Center, a program of Brockton Area Multi-Services, Inc. (BAMSI), and was held at the Massasoit Conference Center in Brockton. The day-long event provided essential information to seniors as well as entertainment and give-a-ways in the afternoon. The Gold Sponsors this year’s event were the Robert L. Epstein Family Foundation, Attorney Kenneth R. Feinberg, and Barry Koretz of BKA Associates, Inc.

Bob Fuda, Director of the Dorn-Davies Senior Center, said, “The Dorn-Davies Senior Center provides services to more than 3,400 seniors each year. All of our programs are well attended and our staff and volunteers are wonderful.”

One of the highlights of this year’s Senior Reception was the musical entertainment provided by the extraordinarily talented Mr. Tony DeBois. Mr. DeBlois is blind, autistic, and has Savant Syndrome. Amazingly he has been playing the piano since age two and graduated from Berklee College of Music with the honor of magna cum laude in 1996. He delighted the crowd with an all request repertoire of song ranging from Louis Armstrong to Andrea Bocelli.

The Sounds of Legends featuring Sigy Moller and Ronnie Howe, once again charmed the audience singing many of the old favorites, getting several people out of their seats to take a turn on the dance floor.

Mayor James Harrington opened the event by welcoming those in attendance and thanking BAMSI for all that it does to support seniors in our community. Attorney Richard Lawton provided valuable information on legal issues affecting seniors, such as estate planning and protecting assets. District Attorney Timothy Cruz offered helpful advice on avoiding frauds and schemes, particularly those targeted at elders.

Honored recipient of this year’s Senior Service Appreciation Award was Mr. Robert Martin for his outstanding contribution to the City of Brockton for past 37 years. Mr. Martin served the city under the office of seven Mayors providing leadership in human services and assistance to those in need.

Principal Sponsors of the Senior Reception were BAMSI and the Brockton Housing Authority. North Easton Savings Bank was a Silver Sponsor; Bronze Sponsors included Cedar Hill Health Care Center and Harbor One Credit Union; and Wine Palace was a Benefactor. Many area businesses donated gifts for the 30 plus raffle prizes distributed and several organizations provided resource information and give-a-ways at a number of resource tables available in the outer lobby.
