Program Description:
COPE is a public health program focused on education, risk
reduction, and prevention of HIV/AIDS. COPE provides direct
services and referrals for at-risk individuals who live in Greater
Brockton through its drop-in center in downtown Brockton and
community outreach efforts. Many of those served by COPE are
involved in activities that put them at high risk for contracting
HIV/AIDS such as alcohol abuse, active injection drug use, other
substance use, and/or risky sexual activity. Many individuals
served face other challenges such as homelessness, poverty,
domestic violence, and/or other physical, emotional, or mental
health challenges. COPE provides one-to-one risk assessment for
HIV/AIDS, referrals to healthcare and human service agencies, and
education and information that encourage HIV/AIDS prevention and
practical harm-reduction techniques for individuals affected by
high-risk situations. All services are welcoming, non-judgmental,
and confidential. COPE serves approximately 500 individuals
annually.
COPE offers:
Information and education about HIV/AIDS and risk reduction;
HIV/AIDS testing and one-to-one risk assessment;
Support and encouragement for reducing high risk behaviors;
Referrals for housing, emergency shelter, health services,
placement in detox, and other services;
A safe and supportive drop-in center where individuals and
families can rest, relax, get a bite to eat or a change of
clothes, and information;
A location for regularly scheduled Narcotics Anonymous meetings;
and
Risk reduction kits that include condoms and bleach for
syringes.
COPE’s bilingual/bicultural staff is educated about and sensitive
to the special issues and needs of people living with HIV/AIDS and
those at risk of HIV/AIDS. Staff is also aware of the many
challenges that individuals with HIV/AIDS face on a daily basis
such as language barriers, lack of financial resources, lack of
information, fear, prejudice, and discrimination. Eligibility for Services:
