Strategies to IndependenceDay and Residential Services
Make a difference in the lives of others. Seek possibilities. Explore potential. Promote opportunities. Pursue passion.
Strategies to Independence (STI), a corporate partner of BAMSI, offers day, residential, and medically intense programs that provide a solid understanding and response to the abilities, interests, and potential of individuals receiving supports. A range of home- and community-based support services are provided to individuals who reside alone or with others.
Our programs are designed to assist persons served to develop and maintain meaningful social relationships while becoming valued members of their communities. Individualized Service Plans are designed in consultation with a team of professionals, including those from health and rehabilitation disciplines, family members, and other providers, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services.
STI Philosophy and Mission
STI strives to improve the quality of life and enhance the sense of self-worth of individuals receiving support. All programs are grounded in an individual-driven philosophy with a clear sense of purpose and a strong emphasis on flexibility and creativity. STI supports individuals, not residences. We work as part of a team to develop individual-driven plans, including those specific to assisting an individual confront the stress of change. The person and his/her growth, self-respect, and sense of individuality are always paramount in our efforts as staff serve as collaborators, educators, guides, sounding boards, facilitators, and friends.
STI Services
Each individual is engaged as a partner as needs are defined and desired supports and interventions are identified. Program services are person-driven, chosen and designed with the individual and geared to change and adjust as needs and wishes grow and evolve. The individual’s feelings of empowerment and ownership release a positive energy which fuels the entire effort.
Staff assist individuals with approaches which engage him/her, thus guiding all activities and interactions to be respectful, to support choice, and to encourage expression of opinions. Persons served are encouraged to exercise their rights, while assuming accompanying responsibilities. The individual participates in the selection of a lifestyle and lives in a home designed to meet selected needs. The level of support varies according to changing circumstances.
Families and significant others are welcome partners in accordance with the needs and wishes of each individual. Typically, these are the most important people in the individual’s life and, as such, must play a recognized and essential role in any plan of care.
Nursing support and assistance guide prevention efforts in all programs. Healthy lifestyles are supported; diet plans are developed; exercise is offered; and health education is encouraged. When indicated, specific nursing interventions are offered to assist with long-term illnesses and disabilities which compromise health. STI nurses work cooperatively with community caregivers to promote optimal care in the residence. Nurses assume special significance in medically intense programs. With correct nursing and staff supports, individuals who have serious medical challenges are able to live successfully in small community homes, pursuing full lifestyles guided by interests and abilities.
